Prevent strategy

Promoting community cohesion and fundamental British values.

The Latymer School is committed to provide a first class, liberal education where pupils achieve their full potential and show consideration for others. As part of this commitment the school provides a broad and balanced curriculum that develops students’ social, moral, spiritual and cultural understanding (SMSC). Through ensuring students’ SMSC development, the school promotes community cohesion and fundamental British values.

We believe that the school should be a safe environment in which students can understand and discuss sensitive topics, including terrorism and extremist ideas, and learn how to challenge these. It is also very important that we explore diversity with our students to promote a mutually respectful and inclusive environment. Assemblies, form time activities and curriculum lessons are used to address diversity and respect which is in turn modelled through all aspects of school life.

We work closely with the Prevent Team (Community Safety Unit, London Borough of Enfield) who support the school by leading assemblies, produce form time resources to educate students (with the main focus of providing a safe, supportive environment for learners both on and off site and supporting staff to identify if there are learners who are suffering, or likely to suffer, significant harm) and promote equality and diversity (as part of the pastoral programme). The Enfield Prevent Team also provide staff training, including a Workshop to Raise Awareness of Prevent (WRAP).

This overall work is consistent with the aims and goals of the school that are to:

  • Help pupils develop lively enquiring minds, apply themselves to tasks and acquire practical skills and knowledge that are valued both for their own sake and for the broader good of society.
  • Ensure that school life is valued for itself as well as a preparation for adulthood and employment.
  • Help pupils develop the ambition and self-esteem to realise their full potential.
  • Encourage pupils to be aware of and understand their own and others’ feelings.
  • Assist pupils to develop an understanding of and respect for the beliefs and values of others.
  • Provide a wide range of opportunities for all pupils.
  • Help pupils understand the world and the interdependence of individuals, communities and nations.
  • Help pupils understand the consequences for the environment of their actions and those of others.
  • Encourage pupils to contribute to the common good both now and in the future.

We are fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all our students. We recognise that safeguarding against radicalisation and extremism is no different to safeguarding against any other vulnerability in today’s society. We fully recognise the contribution we can make to promoting the welfare of young people and protecting them from harm.

Our Prevention of Extremism and Radicalisation policy (accessible on Our policies page) sets out our strategies and procedures to protect vulnerable students from being radicalised or exposed to extremist views.

The elements of our policy are prevention, protection and support. We ensure that staff, governors and students have an understanding of what radicalisation and extremism are and why we need to be vigilant in school. Through training all staff know what the school policy is on tackling extremism and radicalisation and how to respond when concerns arise.

We work closely with the Prevent Team (Community Safety Unit, London Borough of Enfield) who supports the school by leading assemblies, produces form time resources to educate students (with the main focus of providing a safe, supportive environment for learners both on and off site and supporting staff to identify if there are learners who are suffering, or likely to suffer, significant harm) and promotes equality and diversity (as part of the pastoral programme). The Enfield Prevent Team also provides staff training, including a Workshop to Raise Awareness of Prevent (WRAP).

‘Extremism’ is defined in Keeping Children Safe in Education as the vocal or active opposition to our fundamental values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and the mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. This also includes calling for the death of members of the armed forces.

‘Radicalisation’ refers to the process by which a person comes to support terrorism and extremist ideologies associated with terrorist groups.

It is the responsibility of every member of staff, volunteer and regular visitor to our school to ensure that they carry out the requirements of the Prevention of Extremism and Radicalisation policy and, at all times, work in a way that will safeguard and promote the welfare of all the pupils at this school.

‘Terrorism’ is an action that endangers or causes serious violence to a person/people; causes serious damage to property; or seriously interferes or disrupts an electronic system. The use or threat must be designed to influence the government or to intimidate the public and is made for the purpose of advancing a political, religious or ideological cause.
